What is Slacklining?
What is Slacklining?
Slacklining is the art of balancing on a flat line of webbing tensioned between two anchor points. The use of webbing makes it different to the classic tightrope or wire balancing. The nature of the webbing and its tension means that it is stretchy and bouncy, like a trampoline.
Through these differences, and many more created by the way slacklining has evolved as an extreme sport rather than an entertainment art, it has developed completely different styles and tricks to that of the more commonly recognised circus arts. However, the same basic principles apply: balance on a line, and do it as long, high, and in as many different ways as you can!
Where did it come from?
Balance is an integral part of human life. Without it we would not walk, run, or even stand. So, in true human style, it is not surprising that we have developed such a natural skill for fun as well as function.
Slacklining, as we know and love it, grew from a bunch of climbers balancing on chains around car parks in California in the late 1970s. They soon began rigging up climbing webbing to walk on and the sport of slacklining was born.
